During pregnancy, the circulation of blood in the legs can be adversely affected by:
- increased blood volume in the body,
- hormonal changes which weaken and stretch veins,
- increasing pressure on the veins due to the foetus pressing down on the pelvis.
These factors can lead to venous problems such as varicose veins, swollen feet, or tired legs.
The likelihood of such problems is higher if there is a history of venous disease in the family, or if it is not the first pregnancy.
Such problems can be prevented or reduced by the use of Graduated Compression hosiery during pregnancy.
